Cognos Developer

The Cognos Technical Specialist will be responsible for administration, maintenance, and periodic refresh of the Cognos 8.4 Platform, including BI and Planning products; to include managing all aspects of the Cognos tools, including Framework Manager, Transformer and Go! Mobile. She/he will also provide technical support to global BI & Planning project resources for report development and distribution. The candidate must have the skills and experience needed to provide 3rd tier support for the Cognos 8.4 suite of products. She/he will also help develop a GIP real-time monitoring & operational reporting system, and assist in rolling that platform monitoring & reporting system out.

The candidate should be able to work independently with minimal guidance and be comfortable interacting with people of both technical and non-technical backgrounds. Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and management of Cognos 8.4 administration to ensure that proper security restrictions are in place, reports are generated automatically, optimization techniques such as caching are employed and site statistics are being captured for effective ROI feedbac
  • Work with Manager and GIP-Cognos developers to define and roll out as appropriate platform-level: Support Model, Services (e.g. design reviews, code reviews, etc.), Center of Excellence, User Groups
  • Create and implement: best practices, component re-use strategy, operational reporting & associated dashboards, document repository and change control processes
  • Create and maintain documentation detailing the required steps to implement and maintain the Cognos 8.4 platform in a production environment
  • Continually evaluate latest tools and technologies and make appropriate and timely recommendations
  • Maintain vendor relationships and manage Vendor SLAs

Technical Qualifications:

  • Strong data warehouse-related technical analytic skills
  • Extensive knowledge of SOA and web services implementations
  • Advanced skills in relational database concepts and SQL based information extraction
  • Good understanding of Cognos-dependant technologies, including: JVM memory and thread management models, MS Windows, UNIX, Oracle, SQL Server, AS400/DB2, JDBC, Unix shell scripts, and enterprise network and messaging systems
  • Experience serving as 1st level contact for all platform maintenance/support issues
  • Familiarity with JD Edwards ERP (World and/or Enterprise1) and Siebel CRM is a plus

Functional Qualifications:

  • 10 + years post acedemic
  • Minimum 5 years experience with COGNOS BI suite (Framework Manager, Transformer, PowerPlay, Report Studio, Analysis Studio, Query Studio, and Metric Studio and SDK), including 1 year of administration experience for the 8.x versions of the Cognos BI platform
  • Minimum 2 years experience with Cognos Planning
  • Hands-on experience performing Cognos administration tasks including security, software installations, configuration updates and troubleshooting environment
  • Hands-on experience analyzing Cognos environments for capacity and performance related issues, and taking steps necessary to resolve
  • Hands-on experience meeting with business users to gather requirements and create functional and technical documentation
  • Hands on experience with transactional data systems including a good understanding of relational modeling and referential integrity a plus
  • BI/Data Warehouse development team/project experience
  • Broad / full life cycle application development experience
  • Multi-server installation and load balancer experience preferred
  • Experience in Business Analysis, Requirements Gathering and Designing Integration Frameworks
  • Project Management experience with PMP Certification a plus
  • Experience with dimensional modeling is a plus
