IBM Datastage Architect / Sr. Manager
Job Summary
This person will be responsible for managing a small team of 2 highly skilled and experienced application architects and will be the Subject Matter Expert for the IBM Datastage tool. While the team is strong technically, they lacked the ETL (DataStage) component so this position will need to bring a high level of expertise/knowledge in that area. While this position will function as a Sr. Manager & will be one level removed from a Director, this person must still be strong technically with the DataStage product. Experience will need to include design, architecture, integration & support. Support will include response issues, crash issues, integration issues and analysis around why these issues happen.
In addition to managing the group and having a strong technical acumen, this person will also be responsible for defining the strategy, creating the vision, establishing this team as the Center of Excellence for the organization with respect to the tools they are managing. This position will also have a strong customer facing component as this person will need to engage with other teams that are responsible for configuring the tools to support their customers so excellent comm. Skills will be needed as well as a strong business knowledge.
Technical & Functional Responsibilities
- Manage all GIP/ETL and AIP/EAI platform-level activities; to include administration, maintenance, security, and optimization
- Work with integration developers as appropriate, define and roll out platform-level: Support Model, Services (e.g. design reviews, code reviews, etc.), Best Practices, Component Repository and re-use strategy, Operational Dashboards, and Change Control Processes
- Define and help roll out GIP/ETL & AIP/EAI components of a new Enterprise Platforms “Console” for platform-level real-time monitoring & operational performance trend reporting
- Create and maintain documentation detailing GIP/ETL & AIP/EAI platform-level activities
- Provide 3rd level ETL & EAI support
- Continually evaluate latest tools and technologies and make appropriate and timely recommendations
- Evaluate and coordinate roll-out of ETL & EAI Centers of Excellence and User Groups
- Maintain vendor relationships and manage Vendor SLAs

- Review multiple team, group or service deliverables to ensure quality (design walk-through, test results, etc.) and adherence to processes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Manage or actively participate in the budget process.
- Participate in the research, analysis, selection, and implementation of new tools, technologies and/or services.
- Develop, gather and measure relevant productivity metrics.
- Manage or participate on projects as required.
Job Requirements
Technical Qualifications:
- Strong data & application integration-related technical analytic skills
- Extensive knowledge of SOA and web services implementations
- Advanced skills in relational database concepts and SQL based information extraction
- Good understanding of ETL & EAI-dependant technologies, including: JVM memory and thread management models, MS Windows, UNIX, Oracle, SQL Server, AS400/DB2, JDBC, Unix shell scripts, and enterprise network and messaging systems
- Experience serving as 1st level contact for all platform maintenance/support issues
- Familiarity with JD Edwards ERP (World and/or Enterprise1) and Siebel CRM is a plus
Functional Qualifications:
- 10+ years of broad systems experience including 3+ years of leadership.
- Minimum 5 years experience serving as chief architect and administrator for a global ETL platform deployment (IBM DataStage v8.x preferred), to include: project set-up, security, software installations, configuration updates and troubleshooting environment
- Hands-on experience analyzing ETL environments for capacity and performance related issues, and taking steps necessary to resolve
- Minimum 2 years ETL development team/project experience
- Hands-on experience providing architecture guidance and support and a global EAI platform deployment – IBM WebSphere EAI tools preferred (WESB, WTX, WPG, WBM, WSRR)
- Minimum 2 years EAI development team/project experience
- Broad / full life cycle application development experience
- Multi-server installation and load balancer experience preferred
- Experience in Business Analysis, Requirements Gathering and Designing Integration Frameworks
- Project Management experience with PMP Certification a plus
- Experience with dimensional modeling is a plus
General Qualifications:
- 4 year degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent
- Ability to coordinate and aggressively follow up on incidents and problems, perform diagnoses, and provide resolution to minimize service interruption
- Ability to manage and execute multiple projects and tasks concurrently
- Financial and budget experience required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
